'Naseeruddin lied to me to get his role in Paar'
How passionate are today's actors about doing your films?
To give you an idea of what passion for acting can be I must tell you a story. Do you know Naseeruddin actually lied to me and bagged his role in Paar? He said he knew swimming but he didn't.
Smita Patil was initially supposed to do the role and when we were just about to shoot she revealed she didn't know swimming and pleaded me to wait for some time. Since everything was fixed not going ahead with the scheduled date would mean financial losses.

That's when I met Shabana. You know the first thing she told me after shaking hands, "Hi! I am Shabana and I know swimming." That is the kind of passion these actors had.
So you mean to say that passion is missing now?
That was a passion of a different kind and that's what makes them great. It would be wrong to say that actors are not passionate anymore. I am working with Nana Patekar and he is so passionate about his work. Or for that matter Bharati Devi.
At 82 she is so amazing. There is this young guy Romit Raj who is acting in my film. He picked up the art of playing drums in just a few days. He has put up a convincing act in the film.

Why did you cast daughter Anandi in your film Yatra?
She is my assistant director. But Dipti and Nana felt that she fits the bill of their daughter. They convinced her. She is in fact mad at me because she wants to stay behind the camera.
What film will you make next?
I want to make a children's film and I also want to work with Big B.
